How Roman Shades Work

CCL SHADES

CCL shades come with a 6" valance as standard to conceal the components.

Instead of a cord lock, pulleys and pull cords, CCL shades have a clutch mechanism, which is operated by an endless cord loop. Pulling the loop one way will raise the shade and the other way will lower it.

The clutch mechanism is geared to provide an assisted lift, so heavy shades feel lighter when raised with a CCL. The clutch is attached to a fiber glass shaft which runs across the head rail and is held in place by brackets. There is one bracket per lift cord.

As the clutch is rotated, the shaft turns and the cords wrap around the shaft and the shade rises.

This document identifies the main components of a CCL shade.

Head Rail and Components

The head rail is 2½" wide and is made of wood.

Slots and holes are routed into the wood head rail to accommodate the installation brackets.

The components that make up the clutch system are:

  1. Clutch (with removable clutch cover)
  2. Spears – metal slats, which connect the clutch to the drive disc
  3. Drive disc – is attached to the fiber glass shaft and makes it turn
  4. Spear retainer – holds the spears and drive disc in place
  5. Fiber glass shaft
  6. Brackets
  7. Cord Clips

The position of the C clips is important to make sure the shade rises evenly and straight.

Brackets

Woven wood shades are installed using an L bracket with a screw post and a wing nut.

The bracket can be installed using the holes in the face of the bracket or the top.

The screw post of the bracket fits through the routed slot in the head rail and then the wing nut is screwed on to secure the head rail.

Cords

The number of lift cords depends upon the width of the shade and the pattern (softer patterns have more cords). The lift cord for CCL shades is a special, high strength cord and is much thinner than the lift cords on a standard shade. It is only available in white.

The cords run down the back of the shade and down the back of the shade they are threaded through a cord shroud. The cord shroud is a safety feature and does not help the shade operate. The purpose of the cord shroud is to make the cords inaccessible, making sure that young children cannot pull the lift cord away from the shade and form a hazardous loop.

Cord Loop and Cord Tensioner

The cord loop can form a strangulation hazard, if it is not secured to the wall with the cord tensioner provided. This tensioner is designed to grip the cord if it is not installed to the wall under tension and if the shade is operated, the cord tensioner will rise up with the cord and jam the clutch, stopping it from working. There are two different models of cord tensioner

It is important to make sure that there is a flat surface to mount the tensioner, far enough away from the shade so that the shade does not rub on the cord.

Cord loops come in one-foot increments, starting with 3 foot length (measuring from the clutch to the bottom of the loop). The factory will select the cord length that is closest to half the ordered height of the shade. Longer or shorter lengths can be ordered if desired.

Cord loops come in two colors – Vanilla and Chocolate. Metal bead chain is also available in continuous loops.

CCL Shades with Liners

If a standard shade is ordered with a liner, the liner will come attached to the shade. The liner is attached with stitches down each side and where the rings are located on the back.

Liners are either Privacy or Black Out. Privacy Liners are the same color on each side. Black Out Liners are coated on the back and are either white or beige in color on the back.

If the liner has a different color on each side, the darker side will normally face the shade (to coordinate with the bamboo material), unless ordered reversed.

CCL shades can be ordered with movable liners and the liner shade can be made with a cord lock or a CCL, but the head rails will be wider. A CCL shade with movable liner

If a shade is ordered with a liner, the valance will be lined with the same color liner.

Edge Bindings

Edge bindings are 3" wide in total, or 1½" on the front and back of the shade.

The edge binding is attached by sewing it to the shade.

Edge bindings are applied to both edges of the valance and the shade and to the bottom of the shade. The corners are mitered.
